Betula nigra

A round headed medium sized tree to 15m with strongly peeling red-brown bark when young turning nearly completely black with age. The leaves are large and deep green turning yellow in autumn, in winter it bears striking yellow catkins which remain into the winter. Hardy moist soils not clay with a high pH, very tolerant of wind. Mix soil with a good compost and stake well.
